Although modern medicine is capable of curing certain cancerous tumors, any mention of “cancer” is still frightening, especially if the tumor is found in the throat. Not only is the throat difficult to operate on, but the patient also risks losing the vocal cords. Fortunately, surgery is not the only option for
laryngeal cancer.
Dr. Yuen Oi-lin, a registered
traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioner in Hong Kong, shared her success story of treating advanced laryngeal cancer on the program “
100 Diseases and 100 Cures.” In her case, the patient did not have to suffer the risks of surgery, and can now speak and eat normally—his quality of life once again guaranteed .
Laryngeal cancer develops in the tissue of the larynx, the same area that also contains the vocal cords. Yuen said that patients with laryngeal cancer develop a hoarse voice, and must be treated before it progresses too far. Otherwise, an esophagus and nasal tube must be inserted into the throat to deliver food into the stomach—a procedure that requires the vocal cords be cut off—resulting in an inability to speak post-surgery.

Yuen said that, in TCM, there is no such word as “cancer,” but only “accumulation,” which means that something has accumulated somewhere in the body. Many cancers, such as liver cancer, laryngeal cancer, and cervical cancer, can all be cured via TCM treatment.
Acupuncture Plus Chinese Medicine to Cure Advanced Laryngeal Cancer
Yuen once treated a patient in his 70s. By the time he decided to receive TCM treatment, his throat cancer was already in the third or fourth stage. However, he feared surgery and had never undergone chemotherapy. He told Yuen that he couldn’t sleep and couldn’t go to the bathroom normally.Yuen first relieved his anxiety about “cancer” and told him, “From now on, don’t say the word ‘cancer,’ because once you mention it, you will be scared. Just say ‘accumulation’ instead. That is, there is just some trash accumulated somewhere inside the body.”
Next, Yuen focused on solving the most uncomfortable symptoms of the patient, that is, the inability to sleep and eliminate. After helping him recuperate, the patient could do both without much ado.
At this time, the hospital called to urge him to start chemotherapy and electrotherapy, saying that if he didn’t, he may have less than three months to live, and that it was at a very dangerous stage. But as the patient’s condition had progressed through TCM at this time, he was no longer as afraid—so he forewent chemotherapy and instead chose to continue TCM treatment, primarily with acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
TCM Treatment Is Not by Dismantling and Repairing Parts
Yuen performed acupuncture for her patient with needles placed on his hands and feet to assist in the expulsion of accumulated toxins.TCM has discovered that the human body has a “
meridian“ system, which is a channel for the movement of
qi (vital energy), and the internal organs are connected to various parts of the body through the meridians. There are various acupuncture points on the corresponding meridian path, and they have corresponding relations with various parts of the body. Some points on the meridians that have special functions are called acupoints. Stimulating the corresponding acupoints through acupuncture and/or massage can treat diseases of the corresponding viscera (internal organs).

Yuen said that there is a fundamental difference between TCM concepts and Western medicine. TCM treatment of disease is based on treating the human body as a whole and that all parts of the body are always indirectly related. Therefore, TCM treatment is not like “dismantling individual parts for repair.”
No Surgery to Ensure No Loss in Quality of Life
Yuen started performing acupuncture for the patient’s laryngeal cancer patient daily, and then every other day or two. Fortunately, with acupuncture, there are no ill side effects such as those that accompany chemotherapy.Yuen also prescribed Chinese medicine—made into small pills to be taken as a one tablespoon, twice per-day dose. After taking the medicine for a few months, the hospital blood test results showed that the cancer index had become normal.
Although the lump in the patient’s throat is still there, the tumor did not spread, and the patient does not feel much pain. He can now eat normally, sleep, eliminate, walk, and perform other basic daily routines without any problems. Free of the emotional distress of illness he now enjoys a normal quality of life.
After being cured, Yuen reminded the patient to be careful in his daily life and try not to eat fried or grilled food, such as roast goose and duck. She also advised that he keep an even temper, as emotional agitation can have adverse effects on the body.
