EW YORK—There were no blights on Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s march in the Columbus Day parade on Monday. Unlike the Labor Day parade last month, where Cuomo ignored his Democratic challenger Zephyr Teachout when the latter was barely inches away, the Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino made no attempts to greet Cuomo at the parade.
In Bundelkhand, one of the poorest areas of the Uttar Pradesh region in Northern India, a 47-year-old woman is breaking stereotypes, and giving women a chance to fight for their rights, and even for their survival. This is no small feat in a country plagued by discrimination against women and by inequality.
It’s easier to think that violence is something that happens to someone else—in a different country, a different community, a different home. But the truth is that every day, everywhere, women are raped, beaten, and killed just because they are women.
Dr. Stephany Powell, a long-time supporter of women’s rights, recently became the executive director of a nonprofit organization that helps girls and women who have been victimized by domestic sex trafficking and street prostitution get out of the sex trade.
