Fiji successfully defended their Hong Kong Sevens title on a damp Sunday evening over powering New Zealand 21-7 at the Hong Kong Stadium on April 10.

By 8:30am on Saturday morning the iconic South Stand was thronging well-before the Sevens kicked-off: the crowd were in fancy-dress. There were pirates, ghosts, chiefs, squaws, Egyptians, superheroes and criminals decked out in every colour…this is the energy, creativity and expression of fun peculiar to the Hong Kong Sevens that deserves more than one weekend a year to be on display in this underutilised stadium.

It’s Sevens Friday (April 8} in Hong Kong and the Main Event has started. The Qualifying tournament for a coveted spot in next seasons 2016/17 Sevens circuit, and the Core competition, for points, kudos and to help coaches determine their squad for Rio. Each tournament, and after Hong Kong, there are only three left, is an opportunity for players to impress and coaches to select. This year there is the added bonus of named stars from the fifteen a-side game, and the NFL, staking a claim for Rio.
