At a recent concert in Cardiff, pianist Lang Lang refused to play a song commemorating the victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Lang Lang had security remove the concertgoer who made the request, identifying himself again with the form of Chinese patriotism promoted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Lang Lang cancelled a concert scheduled for Saturday night in Buffalo. A leading Chinese dissident sees in this cancellation a sign that Lang Lang is now beginning to pay a penalty for his promotion of the Chinese Communist Party.
While some in the U.S. media have been sympathetically reporting Lang Lang’s claims of ignorance, some Chinese scholars are holding him responsible for his performance at the White House state dinner.
