Cori Broadus, the 24-year-old daughter of entertainer Snoop Dogg, took to social media on Thursday morning to share an update about her health. In an Instagram story, accompanied by a photo from a hospital bed, she disclosed that she had experienced a severe stroke, expressing her emotions by stating: “I had a severe stroke this a.m. I started breaking down crying when they told me.” In a subsequent story, Ms. Broadus added: “Like I’m only 24 what did I do in my past to deserve all of this.”
Strokes occur when there is a disruption in the blood supply to the brain, leading to damage to brain cells. Recognizing the signs of a stroke is crucial for prompt medical intervention, as time is of the essence. The CDC website lists common signs, including sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg—especially on one side of the body. Other symptoms may include confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech, severe headache, and difficulty walking.
Dr. Shahram Majidi, an endovascular neurosurgeon and assistant professor of neurosurgery, neurology, and radiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, who is not treating Ms. Broadus, told Today: “We need to remember that 10 to 15% of stroke happens in … patients younger than 50,” In 2022, Dr. Shahram cautioned that young people should inform themselves of the signs and symptoms of stroke, as well as risk factors including high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol.
This isn’t the first time Ms. Broadus has faced health challenges. At the age of 6, she was diagnosed with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the body’s tissues and organs. According to The Mayo Clinic, there is no cure for lupus. Symptoms include fever, joint pain, shortness of breath, chest pain, and facial rashes. Her journey with lupus has been a public one, and she has been candid about her decisions regarding her health. In a previous interview with People Magazine, she discussed her choice to adopt a more natural and holistic approach to well-being, moving away from a dependency on medication. “I’ve had medication since I was 6 years old, depending on these drugs all my life. So I wanted better for myself,” she told the magazine.
In that same interview, Ms. Broadus opened up about her mental health struggles, revealing a previous suicide attempt in 2021. In an Instagram caption, she credited her family and her boyfriend for giving her purpose, and realizing life is “much more than materialistic things.”
Amidst her ongoing health challenges, Ms. Broadus announced her engagement to boyfriend Wayne Duece in 2022.
