Country singer Jason “Sundance” Head, who rose to fame in 2016 after winning Season 11 of “The Voice,” has released a statement after being accidentally shot in the abdomen during a hunting trip on Friday.
“I am thankful to be alive,” he added. “I have a lot of life left.”
The singer-songwriter sustained the gunshot wound while out hunting on his East Texas ranch, his wife, Misty Head, confirmed online.
“He was out of the vehicle reaching in to grab his 22 [firearm] when he grabbed it the 22 came out of its holster and hit the exterior of the Jeep just right and went off. Sundance said it happened so fast and he could see the bullet dislodging.”
Misty Head noted that her husband was unable to find his phone to dial 911.
“So he took off down the driveway out to the main road to flag a car down for help. 10 cars later someone turned around to help and called 911,” she wrote.
Sundance Head was airlifted to UT Health Tyler, a hospital in Tyler—a city located about 100 miles east of Dallas, Texas.
“Doctor just called me bullet went in above his navel and lodged into his abdominal wall missing all vital organs. He will not require surgery as they are not removing the bullet,” Misty Head wrote. “Him being on the bigger side was a good thing. Bullet is in his fatty tissue.”
‘I’m Still Alive’
Misty Head provided another update regarding her husband’s health on Saturday morning, just hours after he had been discharged from the hospital. She shared a picture of the shirt he was wearing at the time of the shooting. The black, sleeve-less shirt appears to feature blood stains, with a small bullet hole clearly visible in the center.
“He’s definitely going to have a lot to say and once he feels up to it I’ll have him do a video in his own words. Y’all know he has a way with words and know he won’t just have a song to write but an entire album of this accident.”
Sundance Head shared a similar message of gratitude in his video.
“I’m still alive, thankfully—thanks to the good Lord above and the wonderful first responders that helped me as well as the trauma team at UT Tyler,” he said. “They did a wonderful job, and they really did keep me alive. I was sure that I was gonna die. It was one of the craziest things that’s ever happened to me.”
The “Darlin' Don’t Go” singer went on to note that he would elaborate on the accident in a subsequent video.
“I’ve got a wonderful story to tell you about this,” he said.
Prior to his success on “The Voice,” Sundance Head competed on the popular singing competition television series “American Idol” in 2007, where he was eliminated in the semi-finals after making it to the top 16.
The singer debuted his most recent album, “Starting Again,” in 2022.
