Texas Rep.-elect and military veteran Dan Crenshaw said that he reached out to Pete Davidson of “Saturday Night Live” after Davidson made a concerning post on Instagram.
Davidson posted on the social media website over the weekend, saying, “I really don’t want to be on this earth anymore.”
“I’m doing my best to stay here for you but I actually don’t know how much longer I can last. All I’ve ever tried to do was help people. Just remember I told you so <3,” he added.
The post was soon deleted but many friends and fans expressed concern, with some saying they'd personally reached out to Davidson.
Crenshaw said that he was among those who got in contact.
Crenshaw said he conveyed a message that everyone has a purpose.
“God put you here for a reason, but it’s your job to find that purpose. And you should live that way,“ he said, recounting the conversation before noting that Davidson helps others by providing laughter. ”And [you should] know that you have value, and that you do more good than you realize for people. Especially a guy like that. He makes people laugh—sometimes he makes people mad—but he makes people laugh a lot. That’s what we talked about. It was a good conversation.”
Davidson briefly appeared on “Saturday Night Live” later on Dec. 15 to introduce musical guest Miley Cyrus.
History
Crenshaw, who is set to enter office in January 2019, was targeted by Davison during an episode on “SNL” earlier this year.“You may be surprised to hear he’s a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hitman in a porno movie,” Davidson said. “I’m sorry, I know he lost his eye in war, or whatever.”
“In what I’m sure was a huge shock for people who know me, I made a poor choice last week,” Davidson said, eliciting audience laughter. “I made a joke about Lt. Commander Dan Crenshaw. And on behalf of the show and myself, I apologize.”
“I mean this from the bottom of my heart,” Davidson said. “It was a poor choice of words. The man is a war hero and he deserves all the respect in the world.”
He added, “And if any good came of this, maybe it was that for one day the left and the right finally came together to agree on something—that I’m a [expletive]!”
Crenshaw then appeared on stage, looked at Davidson and asked “You think?!” as the audience broke out in cheers. The former Navy SEAL then added, “Apology accepted.”
