Rapper Fredo Santana has died in Los Angeles, according to a family member close to him. He was 27.
Santana, whose real name was Derrick Coleman, died at his home at 11 p.m. on Friday, Lt. David Smith, a spokesman for the coroner’s office, confirmed to CNN.
TMZ later reported that he died from a fatal seizure. The website cited family members for the report.
His girlfriend came to his home at 11:30 p.m. and found him dead on the floor.
The rapper had spoken openly about being addicted to “lean,” which is a combination of prescription-strength cough medicine, soft drinks, and fruit-flavored candy. The cough medicine is used for its codeine or promethazine, according to Drugabuse.org.
He leaves behind an eight-month-old son.
Coleman had said on his Instagram account that he was being treated for liver and kidney failure.
Coleman is the cousin of Chicago rapper Chief Keef, born Keith Cozart. Cozart’s grandmother told CNN Saturday that Coleman had been sick but hadn’t discussed it much.
She said that Cozart is distraught over Coleman’s death.
“He told his cousin, we’re not going to rob, we’re not going to steal, I got a plan, and that was to make music,” Margaret Cozart told CNN.
