Court documents obtained by the publication allegedly show that Carey is being sued by a woman named Maria Burgues, who says she worked for the actress between late 2017 and early 2018.
Burgues claims she was paid just $25 an hour to care for Carey’s eight-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, and was also obliged to travel with Carey and the children all over the world, but was not paid for her travel time.
The former nanny argues that Carey would not let her take breaks, including rests or meals, which she was entitled to under California law.
Elsewhere in the lawsuit, Burgues claims that an unnamed bodyguard for Carey’s children would regularly shout and displayed threatening behavior.
Burgues cites one particular incident that occurred in December 2017, as the family drove to Las Vegas.
The former nanny claims that en route to the destination, the bodyguard began yelling at her and threatened to kick her out of the vehicle and leave her by the road.
Burgues says she complained about the frightening incident but that ultimately, nothing was done.
In a separate incident, Burgues says the same bodyguard was driving her and Carey’s children to a dance class in Sherman Oaks, California, while simultaneously video calling his girlfriend.
She says that he was so distracted by the call that they nearly got into a car accident.
Shortly after, while attending the dance class, Burgues claims that one of Carey’s children walked out unnoticed because the bodyguard was again distracted by his phone.
However, Burgues says she was blamed for the incident, and the bodyguard shouted at her in front of the children, parents, dance instructors, and other nannies that were in attendance.
Burgues says she was fired in April 2018 after complaining about her pay and working conditions.
Although she does not specify what her working hours were each week, Burgues makes it seem as though she was often working irregular hours and performing other duties and tasks for Carey, which did not pertain to the role of nanny.
The lawsuit seeks compensation for “severe emotional distress” and alleges that the former nanny was not given proper wage statements or the total wages she was due at the time she was fired.
A representative for Carey told TMZ: “This is a legally and factually baseless claim that will be defended with vigor.”
Carey has accused Shakhnazaryan of secretly recording her and trying to use the video to blackmail her for $8 million, claims which the former assistant vehemently denies.
