Madonna recently shared insights into the seriousness of her health emergency last summer during the kickoff of her “The Celebration Tour” in Los Angeles. Addressing the crowd, the 65-year-old pop star acknowledged her doctor, Dr. David Agus, and other medical professionals who aided her recovery in the audience.
“It was a strange thing to finally not feel like I was in control,” Madonna remarked, reflecting on the bacterial infection that led to her ICU admission in July. Despite her history of injuries, including a titanium hip, she emphasized that nothing compared to this health scare.
“I’m not kidding. It was pretty scary. Obviously, I didn’t know for four days, because I was in an induced coma. But when I woke up, the first word I said was ‘No.’ Anyway, that’s what my assistant tells me,” she recounted, describing it as a “near-death experience.”
“She’s now out of the intensive care unit and recovering in a regular ward of the unidentified hospital,” Mr. Oseary shared.
The specific bacterial infection Madonna contracted remains undisclosed at this time. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 23,000 Americans succumb to various serious bacterial infections annually.
Madonna’s health crisis necessitated the postponement of her “Celebration” tour. The tour, encompassing 53 shows across North America and Europe, was scheduled to kick off in Vancouver on July 15.
“We will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour,” Mr Oseary previously announced. “We will share more details with you as soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows.”
Madonna credited Dr. Agus for his unwavering support during her recovery, recounting his patience with her constant inquiries about her energy levels and readiness to return to touring. “He’s put up with so many entertaining phone calls from me,” she quipped during the concert.
“When I was sick this summer and I literally couldn’t walk from my bed to the toilet, I would call him every other day and ask him why I didn’t have any energy,” Madonna recalled. “When was my energy gonna come back? When was I gonna feel myself again? When could I go back on tour again? When, when, when, when, when, when, when? And all he would say was, ‘Go outside in the sun.’”
Despite her reluctance to embrace sunlight, Madonna followed Dr. Agus’s advice, albeit with difficulty. “I know that sounds insane, but it was difficult, and I didn’t know when I could get up again and when I could be myself again and when I would have my energy back,” she confessed.
Expressing gratitude to her medical team, Madonna thanked them for their patience and kindness during her recovery. She also extended her appreciation to her children, acknowledging their pivotal role in motivating her to push through.
“Thank you so much, wherever you are,” Madonna said, addressing her medical team. She also thanked her children, stating, “They really helped me pull through because they worked so hard, and I didn’t want to let them down.”
