During a recent episode of the “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast, published on June 11, actress Goldie Hawn revealed she and her partner of over 40 years, actor Kurt Russell, were once the victims of a home burglary.

“LA is terrible,” Ms. Hawn, 78, candidly told the podcast’s host, Kelly Ripa, while recalling the terrifying ordeal.

Although she didn’t specify the date of the incident, the “Overboard” star said the Los Angeles home she and Mr. Russell, 73, shared was “robbed once” while the couple was out having dinner. “We were gone maybe two hours and 20 minutes or something,” she explained.

Upon returning home, Ms. Hawn said she watched a film before deciding to retire to bed. “I went up to the stairs ... and I walked into my closet, and I just lost it.

“They had broken in from the balcony to our bedroom—our closets—and they completely knocked down my door, which is a safe door, so they’re very, very sophisticated, and they got, you know, a lot of my goodies,” she recalled.

At the time, Ms. Hawn believed the break-in was an isolated incident. “So, I’m thinking, ‘Oh, my God, well, the chances are, I guess that’s it,’” she said. “It’s gotta be. The odds are that’s not gonna happen again.”

However, roughly four months later, Ms. Hawn recalled hearing a loud noise while she was home alone with her dog.

“I hear this big thump upstairs, and I was alone, Kurt wasn’t there. And I went, ‘What the hell was that?’ It was just like, ‘Was that a sonic boom? Did somebody jump somewhere?’” she recalled.

“As it turned out, the next day, we discovered that they were trying to get in my bedroom while I was in the house. ... I couldn’t believe it,” she told Ms. Ripa, noting that the couple increased security measures as a result of the robbery and subsequent attempt.

“I’ve had a guard, especially when I’m alone now ... I’m never without a guard,” she shared. “We have a nice relationship with our guard, and you feel good. You feel good, you know?”

Leaving Los Angeles

The couple’s harrowing experiences with crime in Los Angeles also inspired them to make their home in Palm Desert—a city about 120 miles east of Los Angeles—their primary residence.

“We actually thought, ‘What if we couldn’t live in LA? Where would we live?’ And we both decided, ‘I think it’s Palm Desert,’” the mother of three explained.

The couple welcomed their son, Wyatt, in 1986. The actress also has two children—actor Oliver Hudson, 47, and actress Kate Hudson, 45— from a previous relationship.

“We’ve had a house there for 19 years, and it’s so—I can’t explain it. I mean, no wonder all the great seers moved to the desert to get, you know, sort of awareness and enlightenment, and it’s amazing,” she shared. “I love my house. I love it. I created a new swimming pool that looks like sort of a lagoon and I can float around in it.

“It feels a little bit sad in a way because I’m guilty. I’m always guilty because I think I have so much, and there’s so many people that have so little,” Ms. Hawn said.

“But it does give me peace, and that’s one of the things that I think we all need is that sense of peace.”
