A replica of the infamous Iron Throne from the HBO fantasy drama “Game of Thrones” was sold at auction for $1.49 million on Saturday.

The touring prop, which weighs more than 300 pounds, was molded from the original throne featured in the Emmy Award-winning television series, adapted from George R.R. Martin’s bestselling book series “A Song of Ice and Fire.”

The plastic replica, painted a dark metallic color and adorned with jewel accents, was used exclusively for promotional events and tours, such as Comic-Con and various premieres, according to the auction description.

The Iron Throne—described by Martin as “a symbol of power desired by all, yet achieved by few, with its looming presence dominating the Great Hall and inspiring both awe and fear”—brought in the highest bid at the Heritage Auctions event, which was co-presented by HBO.

The auction was held in Dallas, Texas, from Oct. 10 to Oct. 12 and featured thousands of set decorations, costumes, and other props from the acclaimed series. It garnered more than $21 million in total from 4,500 bidders, according to a press release issued on Oct. 13.

Among the big-ticket items sold was the 12-piece Kingsguard armor set worn by Jaime Lannister, portrayed by Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. It fetched $212,500.

The character’s black-leather armor ensemble went for $275,000, while the Night’s Watch ensemble worn by actor Kit Harington’s character Jon Snow sold for $337,500.

Many of the costumes worn by Emilia Clarke in her role as Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons, were also popular among bidders.

The white-and-gray arctic rabbit fur coat she wore when she took on Army of the Dead in the third episode of the “Game of Thrones” eighth season drew $156,250; her gray suede King’s Landing ensemble, also featured in season eight, sold for $112,500.

“From the moment we launched the Game of Thrones auction in September, it was clear this was going to resonate with everyone,” Joe Maddalena, the executive vice president of Heritage Auctions, said in a statement.

“These are extraordinary treasures made by Emmy-winning costume designers and prop makers, who worked tirelessly to adapt George R.R. Martin’s wonderful novels,” he said.

“People wanted a piece of that Game of Thrones magic, and we are honored to have been part of what designer Michele Clapton calls these costumes and props’ afterlives. Everyone at Heritage thanks HBO for the opportunity to ride along.”

The popular HBO series, from creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, premiered in April 2011, airing for eight seasons until the show’s conclusion in May 2019.

Garnering more than 160 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, the series has earned a total of 59 wins, including Emmy Awards for “Outstanding Drama Series,” “Outstanding Music Composition for a Series,” and “Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes” in 2019.

“Game of Thrones,” largely set in the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, follows a variety of story arcs throughout its duration. These include the wars and power struggles of various noble families in their efforts to claim the Iron Throne in Westeros.

In a Sept. 3 press release ahead of the auction, Janet Graham Borba, the executive vice president of production at HBO, emphasized the show’s popularity among viewers and expressed her enthusiasm at being able to provide fans with coveted “Game of Thrones” memorabilia.

“Game of Thrones has been one of HBO’s most successful series and has created an incredible and dedicated fan base around the world,” she said.

“We are excited to give fans an opportunity to take home a little piece of Westeros while also giving them a glimpse of the creativity and the groundbreaking work that went into the series.”
