Actress Gabrielle Union shared a health update on her husband, Dwyane Wade, after the former NBA star recently revealed he had a cancerous tumor removed in 2023.

Speaking to Access Hollywood on Feb. 27, the 52-year-old confirmed Wade, 43, is “doing great now” after having undergone surgery to remove the tumor and 40 percent of his right kidney.
“He’s cancer-free now,” she said at the New York City premiere of her new film “Riff Raff.”
“We’re proud of him that he was brave enough to not only go through all the things that he needed to do to take care of his health, but to share it with the world and hopefully save other people.”
In January, Wade opened up about his experience during an episode of his podcast, “The Why With Dwyane Wade,” recalling how an initial doctor’s visit for stomach pain turned into a shocking diagnosis.

“I did the full body scan and they were able to see my entire body, my entire insides, they were able to see something that was on my kidney,” he said at the time.

“What I had on my kidney was a cyst, a tumor, but it was nothing that could be biopsied. There was nothing they could test unless they went in and surgically removed it. ... I did have cancer. Thank God that I did do the surgery.”

According to the American Cancer Society, kidney cancer is considered one of the 10 most common cancers in the United States, and the sixth most common among men.

Wade shares daughter Kaavia with Union, and is also father to three other children from his previous relationships.

His feelings ultimately delayed his decision to go public with his diagnosis, something Union commends her husband for.

“He was smart to delay talking about his diagnosis and the surgery for over a year to give us all a little time to make peace with it and let all of our very intense fears kind of dissipate a little bit,” she told Access Hollywood.

Wade spent the majority of his nearly 20-year basketball career playing for the Miami Heat.

He is a three-time NBA champion, 13-time NBA All-Star, and an eight-time member of the All-NBA Team, among other achievements, and is regarded as one of the greatest shooting guards in NBA history.
