Former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell has opened up about the intense scrutiny he faced as a young actor navigating Hollywood, emphasizing the pressures of growing up in the spotlight.

Now 38, Bell, who is best known for his role in the 2000s sitcom “Drake & Josh,” recalled how the media often misrepresented his actions, leading to public misconceptions about his behavior.

In an interview with People, he described how even minor incidents were sometimes framed negatively.

“You’re walking with your friends and you trip outside of the Chateau Marmont on your way to the taco shop, and all of a sudden the next day it’s like, ‘Drake Bell stumbles drunk out of the Chateau Marmont,’” Bell said. “You’re like, ‘There was a crack! I tripped on the sidewalk!’ It’s always just that highlighting of all of your missteps.”

He noted that while public scrutiny can be challenging for any celebrity, the impact is particularly profound on young entertainers who are still figuring out their lives.

“When you’re an adult, of course, it still has [an] effect, but when you’re this adolescent trying to figure out life and all of a sudden you’re like, ‘Why every time?’” Bell said.

Bell, who rose to fame alongside co-star Josh Peck, also expressed relief that his time as a Nickelodeon star predated the era of social media dominance. He acknowledged the additional pressures that modern child actors face due to the instant and constant comparison enabled by platforms such as Instagram and Twitter, now X.

“We didn’t have to compare, ‘Why did Josh have more followers than I do on Instagram? Oh, Josh got more likes on his picture than I did that I posted. What do I have to do?’” he said. “I’m just so glad that we didn’t have to live through that.”

Bell has also been candid about the personal hardships he has faced, including the lasting impact of childhood abuse. In the 2023 docuseries “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” he revealed that he was sexually abused by his former dialogue coach Brian Peck while working as a child actor. Despite the trauma, Bell says his passion for entertainment has helped him move forward.

“I got to just stay focused and happy and healthy and keep my mind away from the demons. They’re always there, but being positive, trying not to dwell, and keeping people around you that care about you, that’s something that I really gained,” he said.

Bell’s Career

Born on June 27, 1986, Drake Bell’s career began at an early age, with his first television appearance in the 1994 sitcom “Home Improvement.” He gained further recognition with roles in 1996’s “Jerry Maguire” and Nickelodeon’s sketch-comedy series “The Amanda Show.”

His breakout role came in 2004 when he starred as the charismatic and mischievous Drake Parker in “Drake & Josh,” a show that became a defining part of Nickelodeon’s success in the mid-2000s.

Beyond acting, Bell pursued a music career, releasing several albums that showcased his rock and pop influences. His debut album, “Telegraph” (2005), was followed by “It’s Only Time” (2006), which featured the hit single “I Know” and charted internationally. He continued to release music, including “Ready Steady Go!” (2014), an album influenced by classic rock sounds.

His work in entertainment has earned him accolades, including multiple Kids’ Choice Awards for Favorite TV Actor and a Young Artist Award.

In addition to his entertainment career, Bell has relocated to Mexico, where he has performed for Latin American audiences and continues to engage with his supporters through music and social media.

“I’ve spent so much time down there and, like, really built this amazing fan base. So now I do a bunch of songs in Spanish and release Latin music and do collabs with other Latin artists,” he said during an interview on the Adam Carolla Show.
