Steven Tyler, best known as the lead singer of Aerosmith, will not fully recover from a vocal cord injury he sustained last year.
“He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible,” the statement said.
“We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision—as a band of brothers—to retire from the touring stage.”
The statement noted that people who’ve already bought tickets for Aerosmith’s now-canceled tour—dubbed “Peace Out: The Farewell Tour”—through Ticketmaster will “automatically be refunded.”
Those who’ve purchased tickets via third-party resale sites such as SeatGeek, StubHub, and VividSeats will have to reach out to their point of purchase “for more details,” it further stated.
In addition to Tyler, members of the Boston-based rock band formed in 1970 include guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton, and drummer Joey Kramer.
The award-winning band has received four Grammys from 17 nominations. They also won six American Music Awards and numerous other awards for their multi-platinum albums such as “Pump,” “Get a Grip,” and “Nine Lives.”
Tyler first announced he injured his voice in September 2023, saying in a statement that he damaged his vocal cords during a show that led to subsequent bleeding.
In addition to winning multiple Grammys, Aerosmith is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and has a massive catalog of hits since its formation over five decades ago, including “Dream On,” “Walk This Way,” and “Sweet Emotion.”
“We are grateful beyond words for everyone who was pumped to get on the road with us one last time,” the band said in its latest statement. “Grateful to our expert crew, our incredible team and the thousands of talented people who’ve made our historic runs possible.”
