Deep Dive (June 2): Texas Declares Disaster Over Border Crisis

|Updated:

Secretary of State Antony Blinken is marking his first trip to Central America by saying the United States wants a shared commitment on migration with those countries. Blinken says the United States is preparing a $4 billion aid package to help countries in the region meet the challenges of “irregular migration.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration in response to the humanitarian crisis. It comes the same day the Biden administration formally ends the Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” policy. Abbott said, “President Biden’s open-border policies have paved the way for dangerous gangs and cartels, human traffickers, and deadly drugs like fentanyl to pour into our communities.”
