Authorities are asking anyone with information related to the June 20 assault of a construction worker to come forward, after the man was attacked in Garden Grove by a group of men, resulting in skull fractures and severe brain injuries.

Carlos Ayala, 54, was beaten while working a job with co-workers paving the parking lot of a shopping center near Westminster Avenue and Brookhurst Street just before 1 a.m. after he asked the men who were exiting a karaoke lounge not to step on the fresh asphalt, police said.

“While my father and his coworkers were both beaten, unfortunately my dad suffered the most injuries … He was found unconscious and couldn’t speak or walk due to the severity of his injuries,” the man’s daughter, Sara Ayala, said on a GoFundMe page created to support the family after the incident.

She said her father is the provider of their household and his injuries create financial uncertainty for the family.

According to Ayala, her father is also now suffering from PTSD due to the attack.

“He hears a loud noise. He jumps,” she told ABC7. “His defense is to hit you or put his hands up and defend himself because that’s unfortunately the last memory he has.”

She said Garden Grove police are reviewing surveillance footage to identify the attackers, which she has been told involved as many as 20 people.

Garden Grove police did not return a request for comment on deadline.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective D. Camara at 714-741-5824.
