Officials told residents in Manitou Springs to be cautious after rescuers were forced to save several people who were trapped in a mudslide along Highway 24.

The Denver Channel posted photos of cars submerged in mud on its Twitter feed.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office tweeted there were “reports of some vehicles stuck in the debris near mile marker 297” and there were “no known injuries.”

“Do not drive through flooding areas and don’t let children play in the culverts and waterways. Very dangerous,” Colorado Springs police tweeted, according to the Denver Channel.

A shelter was opened at Manitou Springs at Historic Community Congregational Church. It said that if there is more flooding that could threaten homes, then they could go to the shelter.

“Some of the storms over the Plains may produce large hail up to golfball size along with wind gusts to 60 mph,” the National Weather Service said, according to the Denver Post. “One or two tornados could occur as well. The best chance of severe storms looks to be east of the I-25 urban corridor.”

The Gazette newspaper showed a video of the mudslide near Highway 24.
