MIAOLI, Taiwan—On the evening of Feb. 25, Shen Yun Performing Arts opened its third of four consecutive performances at the Miaobei Arts Center.
In attendance was traditional Chinese medicine doctor Tingchuan Lu. He was deeply impressed by Shen Yun’s courage to present what other performances dare not—the human rights issue in communist China.
“I have deep respect for these artists and their determination to speak the truth,” he said. “There are very few people who dare to do so. I’m touched by their indomitable spirit.”
Shen Yun was established in 2006 by leading Chinese artists who had fled the persecution of China’s communist regime. Based in New York, the company’s mission is to revive China’s 5,000 years of divinely-inspired culture destroyed by decades of communist rule.
“Shen Yun is a renowned dance company that has achieved great artistry,” Dr. Lu praised. “The performance was an eye-opener. I was stunned by the amazing messages, the stories, and the talents of the performers. It was my honor to have been able to attend this world-class event.”
Dr. Lu said the pandemic has wreaked havoc on both the mental and physical health of everyone over the past few years. As a medical professional, he thought Shen Yun “is an opportunity for people to release their stress and depressive moods.”
“I hope everyone can watch Shen Yun and feel renewed,” he added.
Referring to Shen Yun’s story-dance depicting the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of Falun Gong— a spiritual practice based on Buddhist traditions—Dr. Lu stated, “all the peaceful people in the world should be free to choose their faith. I think Falun Gong practitioners are worthy of great respect.”
“The name Shen Yun is synonymous with freedom! People in China don’t even have the freedom to enjoy art. I hope they will soon be able to see Shen Yun and partake in my joy,” he said.
Also in the audience were company CEO Zongzheng Fang and his wife. After hearing many good things about the performance, Mr. Fang decided to give Shen Yun a try.
After the show, the couple gave their verdict and agreed that Shen Yun’s tickets were “definitely worth the price.” They thought the performance did a great job of “reestablishing people’s belief in peace and in a brighter future.”
Mr. Fang explained that, in modern society, we can easily feel discouraged and frustrated. However, the compassion displayed in Shen Yun’s performance is conducive to bringing optimism back to people’s hearts.
“Shen Yun is different from any other performances we’ve seen. Every program was unique,” Mr. Fang said. “China’s 5000 years of history, the display of Confucianism— its strength, beauty, and gentleness—everything was perfect.”
Referring to Shen Yun’s mission to revive traditional culture, Mr. Fang said it’s definitely a worthwhile cause.
“I hope Shen Yun artists can continue to introduce the show to the world. This will allow people to see the glory of ancient Chinese civilization and further advocate the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance,” he said.
“In this way, everyone can work towards bringing peace to the world. I think that’s excellent.”
