Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on July 4 “ideologies” posed risks to national security and urged parents, teachers and religious leaders to observe the behavior of teenagers and report those who break the law to the authorities.
Her comments come as Beijing has solidified control over the financial hub through the imposition of a draconian national security law that has been used to decimate the city’s pro-democracy camp. It has also enacted sweeping changes to Hong Kong’s political system to reduce democratic participation and oust people deemed disloyal to Beijing.
