MISSISSAUGA, Canada—CEO Susan Goebel attended Shen Yun Performing Arts with her family at the Living Arts Centre on March 25.
“It was wonderful,“ Ms. Goebel said. ”Absolutely wonderful. I was expecting great visuals, [and it was] wonderful to listen to. Fantastic.
She was impressed with the stories of ancient Chinese history. “I happen to be a big fan of the older stuff in terms of mythology, so I loved a lot of those different pieces.”
“[The erhu] was enchanting,” she said, adding that she could feel the instrument’s compassion. “I can, and I love that.”
Based in New York, Shen Yun was founded in 2006 by leading Chinese artists and quickly became the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture.
“I can certainly see all of the older elements of costume design and the makeup,” Ms. Goebel said. “Oh my gosh, I don’t know how many people are helping backstage with all of those costume changes that they had to go through. It was wonderful. They did a great job.”
Ms. Goebel said Shen Yun was better than she expected. “I think it absolutely exceeded my expectations from a visual perspective. I do love the visual component and the synchronicity of it. We had a beautiful spot to watch everything unfold on stage.”
She had praise for the female dancers: “Stunning. That’s the only word that comes to mind.“ And for the male dancers, she said, ”Oh my goodness. The physique and the ability to do what they do on stage. The acrobatics, the flexibility. This is the first time I’ve actually ever seen a fan dance completed by male dancers. Yes. It’s always been female. I love it. It’s wonderful. And the chopsticks—nice.”
Ms. Goebel appreciated the presenters and the show as a whole. “It was well put together and well done, and I’ve got to give shout-outs to the two narrators.”
She had special words for the Shen Yun artists. “Congratulations. Keep it up. Great work. Thank you so much.”Reporting by Dongyu Teng.
