NEW YORK—A new police precinct building at Central Park, next to the park’s iconic Great Lawn, was opened on March 26 after several years of renovation.
The set of buildings was originally constructed in 1871 as stables and sheds, next to the York Hill receiving reservoir. The buildings were converted into a garage in 1915, and soon after the reservoir was drained and filled (creating the Great Lawn), the complex was redesignated as a police station. Previous work took place in the 1950’s, after a fire damaged the area.
The NYPD was moved into a different building in 2002, when work began. Now they are back in the renovated building.
