It seems all the buzz around health today revolves around women, and for good reason. Women make up a huge part of the market in natural health, whereas men seem to be indifferent on day to day health matters. However, if there is one thing men tend to focus on its prostate health as it affects a good number of men over 40, and over 80% of men over 60. I’d say its time to investigate how to heal the prostate through natural remedies.

The Role of the Prostate Gland

The prostate is a walnut sized gland that sits just below the bladder in men. Although it doesn’t get a lot of attention (until something goes wrong), it has some very important roles in men’s overall health, and the health of his offspring. The prostate gland is a key component in the male reproductive system and is responsible for a few key things, including:
  • The makeup of the male sperm
  • Filtering toxins and impurities out of the semen to produce the finest sperm possible
  • First line of defence against disease and infection of the genitourinary system
So to ensure a healthy urinary system and healthy offspring, the prostate gland carries a lot of the load.

The Main Causes of Prostate Dysfunction

For prostate enlargement to become such a big issue for men, one has to wonder what common threads have made this the biggest concern for mens health. Although there are a number of contributing factors, there are certainly some common ones that have lead to this condition.

Xenoestrogens

Perhaps one of the most common impurities we have in our systems today are xenoestrogens, or man made estrogen mimicking molecules. Xenoestrogens are found in a number of places but are most common in plastic containers, lining of canned food, styrofoam cups and containers, cosmetics and toiletries, and agricultural chemicals.
Other hormone disruptors that are largely consumed on a daily basis include unfermented soy products, and animal protein that has been injected with growth hormones. These chemicals and disruptors cause imbalances in the delicate male estrogen – testosterone balance which leads directly to an enlarged prostate. These estrogen mimicking molecules need to be removed in order to heal the prostate effectively.

Sedentary lifestyle

Due to its location, the prostate needs a healthy amount of circulation to provide it with fresh blood and oxygen. This is why any form of exercise is beneficial, and high intensity exercise a few times a week may prove to be exactly what the prostate ordered.

If exercise is something you find a bit difficult to incorporate due to time, money, or motivation, consider a good at home exercise routine that doesn’t require extra equipment, and work with a fitness coach if required. There are many exercises you can do to improve your prostate’s health. However, an exercise that Advanced Urology recommend is to lie on the floor with your knees bent and apart. Tighten your pelvic floor muscles for three seconds and then relax them for three seconds.

A good rebounder is something you can also add on that can create easy movement and circulation in as little as 15 minutes a day. The bottom line is that a sedentary lifestyle creates congestion and stagnation in the prostate, and those who spend long hours seated (truck drivers, bike riders, pilots, commuters, and office workers) increase that pressure and congestion, which only increases your risk of an enlarged prostate. Get up off the couch, and go play a sport or go to the gym to increase circulation and start healing the prostate.

Stress

This is a common factor that seems to be overlooked in the role of mens prostate health. Traditionally the provider and protector of the family, men typically work long hours at a job that causes plenty of stress. This can take an exhausting toll on the body, which wreaks havoc with their hormone (cortisol in particular) levels which in turn creates excess free radicals and inflammation which are big factors in prostatitis and prostate cancer.
Men need to learn to adapt better to stressful situations, and focus more on things that make them happy, rather than those things that stress them out.

Signs of Prostate Problems

There are many things that can tip you off that your prostate needs some healing. Some common signs of prostate problems include:
  • Frequent urination
  • Urinary urgency
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Reduced force of urine stream
  • Incomplete emptying of the bladder
  • Inability to urinate at all
  • Low sex drive
  • Balding
Do these resonate with you? If so, look into the following natural remedies so you can heal your prostate.

Natural Healing Remedies

There are certainly no shortage of natural remedies to help deal with an enlarged prostate, and when used effectively, they can eliminate the need to do any kind of invasive testing or surgery. Key nutrients to prevent and reverse inflammation and prostate enlargement include:
  • Apple peels
  • Resveratrol
  • Zinc (pumpkin seeds, beef liver, sardines, ginger, oysters, pecans, oats, chicken, walnuts)
  • Lycopene (grapefruit, tomatoes, red peppers, goji berries, and raspberries)
  • Indole-3-Carbonyl (broccoli, kale, collards, cabbage)
  • Saw Palmetto
  • Vitamin D
  • Omega 3’s (wild caught salmon, walnuts, avocados, hemp, chia)
  • Turmeric
  • Magnesium
On the subject of apple peels, a study carried out by researchers at the University of Wisconsin revealed that antioxidants found in apple peels may impede cancer cell growth. According to the research team, prostate cancer cells grew more slowly and had shorter survival time as a result of the exposure.
Beneficial activities include:Combine these key nutrients and activities with a produce and antioxidant filled diet, and you have assembled the best weapons against prostate enlargement and prostate cancer.

Things to Avoid

In simple terms, anything that has significant toxicity or promotes inactivity can cause harm to the prostate. More specifically, be sure to avoid:
  • Plastic containers (contain BPA)
  • Canned food (contain BPA)
  • Processed foods
  • Artificial additives (ie. artificial sweeteners and MSG)
  • Agricultural chemical
  • Styrofoam cups or containers
  • Cosmetics, personal care products, and toiletries that contain parabens and phthalates (good resource here)
  • Hormone injected animal meat (look for organic, or at least hormone and antibiotic free)
  • Unfermented soy
  • Smoking
  • Caffeine
Keep in mind that anything applied to the skin (deodorant, perfume, lotions, sunscreen, shampoo, soap) is directly absorbed by the body. Therefore, any skin dose is 10 times more toxic than an oral dose, so be very careful of ANY personal care product that touches your skin, as it magnifies the effect of any toxicity as compared to an oral dose.

With a little work, you can start healing your prostate and eliminate the inconveniences and sometimes humiliating conventional procedures that come with it.
