Over the next few months, we’re going to sit down with many public servants in California to understand them better. We face a lot of issues in California, and we want to highlight the people working on these problems.
Siyamak sits down with Senator Catherine Blakespear, who represents Northern San Diego County and Southern Orange County. Before being elected to the California State Senate in 2022, she served as Mayor of Encinitas, where she focused on issues such as affordable housing, climate action, and transportation improvements.
“When I had a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in journalism, my first job was at the LA Times, where I covered government. I really could see, wow, these people are making big decisions that affect everyday lives... I cared about the environment, environmental protections, and representing the community and what the community was interested in. There’s nothing more satisfying than doing something larger than yourself, than feeling like you’re working for the common good,” says Blakespear.
