The theft of ATM machines in San Francisco has increased from just two in 2022 to 13 this year, according to data from the city’s police department.

The most recent theft happened in early December, where at least five thieves used a truck to plow through the front entrance of a CVS store and steal an ATM located inside, in San Francisco’s Richmond District, according to media reports.

A month earlier, a similar scene happened at Walgreens, on the 2600 block of Mission Street, where two vehicles and an unknown number of thieves broke a sliding glass door around 4:15 a.m. and removed an ATM located inside.

The suspects managed to lose police following a pursuit and remain at large, according to Mission Local, a local online news site.

That incident happened just weeks after another nearby, at a pub on Valencia and 25th streets at around 3 a.m.

Some local media have said they believe the number of thefts this year has been under-reported by authorities.

The San Francisco Police Department did not respond to a request for comment.
