In today’s special program, we dive into the pros and cons of Proposition 36, one of the most notable initiatives of this election season in California. We present multiple perspectives from Vern Pierson, district attorney of El Dorado County, and Matt SotoRosen, a public defender from San Francisco.

Proposition 36 makes several key changes to Proposition 47. First, it increases punishment for certain theft and drug crimes. Second, it creates a new treatment-focused court process for some drug possession offenses. Third, it requires courts to warn individuals convicted of selling or providing illegal drugs that they may be charged with murder if they sell drugs to someone who subsequently dies from those drugs.
