A man who was killed in an altercation at a vacation rental in San Diego’s Point Loma has been identified, authorities said.
Mark Giancarlo, 38, of Chicago was found unconscious and unresponsive by officers responding to a medical emergency call after 2 a.m. on Feb. 19 at a residence in the 2800 block of Poinsettia Drive, the San Diego Police Department said.
Giancarlo was pronounced dead after paramedics took him to a hospital, Lt. Jud Campbell said in a statement.
According to investigators, Giancarlo got into a physical fight with a 44-year-old man from the same out-of-town traveling group. Giancarlo went into medical distress while he was being restrained by the other man, Campbell said.
Police have not released the other man’s identity.
“While being restrained, Giancarlo went into medical distress, leading to the 911 call,” Campbell said.
The other man was detained for questioning by homicide detectives but later released.
“This investigation is open and ongoing,” Campbell said.
Campbell said Giancarlo’s cause of death was still pending.
Point Loma is a peninsula west of downtown San Diego.
