A man was killed in a predawn fight with another man at a vacation rental in Point Loma on Feb. 19, San Diego authorities said.

Officers responded to a 2:10 a.m. report of a man in medical distress after a fight in the 2800 block of Poinsettia Drive, said police Lt. Daniel Meyer.

When the victim, a 38-year-old man, was found by officers at the rental, he was no longer breathing, according to the lieutenant.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was not released.

The other man was detained by authorities but released pending further investigation. He was identified only as a 44-year-old man.

“It appears the residence where this occurred is a vacation rental. A group of people from out of town were staying there,” Meyer said. “During the night, there was a physical altercation where the male who died was physically restrained by another member of the group.

“While being restrained, the male went into medical distress leading to the 911 call,” according to Meyer.

Detectives were investigating the nature of the fight and the method of restraint, Meyer said.

The county medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Point Loma is a rugged peninsula west of downtown San Diego.

San Diego police urged anyone with information to call the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
