“There are a lot of people in Oakland who are arming themselves. There’s one restaurant that has been losing money from people who are dining in his restaurant, then see their car getting broken into, and run out mid-meal to deal with their car, never getting around to paying the check,” Mr. Woodhouse said. “So, the constituents in the highest-crime areas were never on board with the defunding stuff. A lot of that came from what were traditionally the safer areas of town, which have now become much less safe.”
Siyamak sits down with Leighton Woodhouse, journalist and Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker who has been covering Oakland and the San Francisco Bay Area. He'll share his observations and analysis of the rising crime issues in Oakland, the different types of crime that are happening, and how they contribute to the deterioration of the social fabric of the city.
“What happens to a community at large when this stuff starts to happen? We become isolated from each other, distrustful of each other. We start to arm ourselves because of our distrust for each other. What happens to the social fabric of a community like that? I think that that is a very dangerous place to be in.”
