4 Deputies Shot, Gunman Dead in Santa Rosa Shooting

Four deputies were injured and a suspected shooter died Mar. 4 in a shooting in west Santa Rosa, about 60 miles north of San Francisco, the Sonoma County Sheriff said in a statement.

Deputies responded to a call around 12:10 a.m. of a man brandishing a rifle. Authorities didn’t specify the man’s location.

Upon arriving, he fled in a vehicle. The deputies gave chase and the man fired shots at them, which the deputies returned.

According to authorities, the man, who had paused driving momentarily, drove and crashed his vehicle into an unknown object. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four deputies were injured in the incident. One was shot in the head and is in critical but stable condition, according to media reports. Another suffered a gunshot to his leg and two injured their hands.

Sonoma County Sheriff officials said the deputies’ body-worn camera footage will be released per state law.

No further details were available about the suspect.
