Frito-Lay is recalling a “limited number” of its Doritos potato chips over soy and wheat allergen concerns, according to federal health officials.

The packaging on the chips does not disclose common allergens, said the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in a recall notice on Aug. 1.

There have been several food recalls by the FDA in 2023.

A total of 7,000 14.5-oz. and 1-oz. bags of Doritos Nacho Cheese Flavored Tortilla Chips were pulled in the voluntary recall, as they may contain undeclared soy and wheat ingredients from spicy sweet chili tortilla chips.

The Doritos covered by this recall were distributed at retail stores in Pennsylvania and other outlets like food service locations and vending machines, from June 29 onwards.

No other Frito-Lay or Doritos products are included in the recall, according to the notice.

Contaminated Doritos Could Cause Fatal Allergic Reaction

No allergic reactions related to the recalled products have been reported, but those who are allergic or have a sensitivity to soy or wheat, “run the risk of illness should they consume these products,” the FDA said.

Those individuals “should not consume the product and discard it immediately,” said Frito-Lay

Soy and wheat products are common food items that currently account for some of the more serious allergic reactions in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The severity of allergic reactions to wheat or soy, vary from person to person and can change over time, the CDC said.

One of the worse reactions is anaphylactic shock, which is a severe reaction that can occur within minutes of exposure to an allergen, even resulting in death, but not all allergic reactions are that severe.

The Epoch Times reached out to Frito-Lay for further comment.

Mondelēz Recalled Breakfast Sandwiches in July

Last month, Mondelēz Global voluntarily recalled belVita’s breakfast sandwiches, which were sold nationwide, after reports of alleged allergic reactions.

The belVita products include Breakfast Sandwich Dark Chocolate Crème and belVita Breakfast Sandwich Cinnamon Brown Sugar with Vanilla Crème.

The recall notice blamed cross-contamination at a U.S.-based manufacturing facility for adding potential peanut allergens into the product.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanut may risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions by consuming these products,” Mondelēz stated in a press release.

“No other belVita products, Mondelēz Global LLC products, or markets outside the United States are included in or affected by this recall.”

The food manufacturer were made aware of the allergen during an internal review inspection, which discovered “the potential presence of peanut protein residue” on the line used to make the affected belVita sandwiches.

Mondelēz also revealed three unconfirmed reports of possible allergic reactions to those products.
