Best Buy is issuing a recall of 930,000 Insignia pressure cookers sold by the store due to a burn hazard.
The recalled products have inaccurate volume markings on the inner pot. This may lead to consumers overfilling the pot, causing hot food and liquids to be ejected when the appliance is vented using the quick-release method or opened while its contents are pressurized, according to an Oct. 26 notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The recall involves Insignia Multi-Function Pressure Cookers with model numbers NS-MC60SS8, NS-MC60SS9, or NS-MC80SS9.
Inner pots with model numbers NS-MCRP6NS9 and NS-MCRP6SS9, which are sold separately as replacements, have also been recalled. The inner pots are black with a non-stick coating, and they have embossed markings showing cup and liter measurements, USCPSC said.
The electric pressure cookers and inner cooker pots are 6- and 8-quart capacity.
To date, Best Buy has received 31 incident reports of the cookers’ contents being expelled under pressure, according to CPSC. The retailer has received 17 complaints of burn injuries from these appliances, some of which were second-degree and severe burns.
The pressure cookers were sold at Best Buy stores nationwide, as well as online on Best Buy’s website and Amazon from October 2017 through June 2023, and were sold for somewhere between $50 and $120 each.
“Consumers should always check that the inner pot is not filled beyond two-thirds capacity when pressure cooking, that the lid is fully locked before pressure cooking is started, and that the floating locking valve has dropped before attempting to open the lid when pressure cooking,” said the CPSC.
Consumers are asked to stop using the recalled pressure cookers immediately and contact Best Buy for a free replacement of the inner pot and floating locking valve, the CPSC said.
Best Buy, which is based in Richfield, Minnesota, will not provide refunds or replacements for pressure cookers returned in stores, according to a notice on the company’s website. To receive a replacement kit, impacted consumers must register online. Only consumers who own the recalled pressure cooker—not just the inner pot—are eligible.
Sensio Recall
The Insignia recall is the second involving pressure cookers in recent months. In August, Sensio recalled about 860,000 pressure cookers because the lid can unlock and be removed during use, resulting in an explosion of boiling-hot food and liquid. There were 63 reports of incidents, including 61 burn injuries, some of which involved 2nd-degree and 3rd-degree burns to the face, torso, arms, and hands, according to Sensio.
The recall includes Bella, Bella Pro Series, Crux, and Cooks electric pressure cookers, and Bella stovetop pressure cookers.
The stainless-steel electric pressure cookers are 6-, 8-, and 10-quart capacity, while the stovetop pressure cookers are 5-, 8-, and 12-quart capacity. They were sold from September 2015 through September 2020.
