Former Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons star Dennis Rodman owes more than $42,000 in back taxes, according to report from the Detroit News, citing public records.

The retired eccentric athlete owes $42,497 in delinquent taxes, according to a tax lien filed by the state of California against Rodman obtained by the local Detroit newspaper.

Rodman’s business manager disputes the lien, saying: “We just got a refund check from the state for $42,000 or $43,000,” according to the News.

“If you owed the money, you'd never get a check from them,” she told the newspaper. “They would have taken his money. It’s got to be incorrect.”

The report noted that two years ago, Rodman’s federal tax debt was nearly $450,000.

The news comes as the Detroit Pistons plan to retire Rodman’s No. 10 jersey in April, according to the Associated Press.

Rodman won NBA titles with the Pistons in 1989 and 1990, and was known for his rebounding and his defense, averaging 11.5 rebounds per game with nearly 550 games with the Pistons.
