Former cabinet minister Kathleen Wynne will be Ontario’s first female premier after winning the leadership race of the province’s Liberal Party in a come-from-behind victory, beating out frontrunner Sandra Pupatello.

Wynne defeated Sandra Pupatello on a third ballot on Jan. 26 at the Ontario Liberal Party convention. It hasn’t yet been announced when she will meet with Lieutenant-Governor David Onley to be sworn in as premier.

Wynne has held a number of cabinet posts, including as minister of aboriginal affairs, municipal affairs and housing, transportation, and education.

She has also been a school trustee and a community activist.
