Wuhan’s Popular Shopping Center Losing Nearly All Business Tenants

Wuhan Optics Valley Pedestrian Street is considered a paradise for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Tourists visiting Wuhan often put it on their list of must-see attractions.

On April 9, the day after the removal of city-wide lockdown, dozens of business owners held a protest in the shopping district, demanding one year’s free rent.

Protesters: One year’s free rent, or we will stop the lease and quit.

However, their landlord, a state-owned real estate company, refused to negotiate any form of rent reduction with them.

A video released in early May showed that almost all shops and restaurants on the Pedestrian Street remain closed. - Opened in November 2013, the Wuhan Optics Valley Pedestrian Street, which spans nearly one mile, is said to be the longest pedestrian-only street in the world. The area is composed of five blocks named after their respective architectural styles; Contemporary Charm, Spanish Charm, German Charm, Italian Charm, and French Charm.
