According to the UNHCR’s Global Trends Report 2011, released to coincide with World Refugee Day on June 20, 7.1 million refugees around the world are stuck for years on end in camps or living precariously in cities. Furio De Angelis, the UNHCR’s representative in Canada, praised Canada for its tradition of accepting refugees. “Canada should be proud of its longstanding hospitable tradition of receiving and allowing hundreds of thousands of refugees from different parts of the world to re-establish their hopes in this country,” he said in a statement. Several events took place across the country to mark World Refugee Day 2012. UNHCR/B. BANNON
