Doctors had advised pregnant mom Liz Brewer to abort two of her triplets to save one. However, she refused to go through with it.
The U.K. woman, at 13 weeks pregnancy, was offered a “selective reduction,” which is used to abort the twins in her pregnancy to give the single baby a better chance at survival.
But Brewer and husband Timo said they were determined to go through with it after they lost a child seven years earlier.
On her triplets’ survival, Brewer said, “It has been an amazing ending to our pregnancies and has helped to heal us.”
The doctors, she added, “offered me a selective reduction, to abort the twins and keep the baby that was at a high risk of Downs [syndrome].”
“It suddenly makes you think about if you are putting your babies at risk. If I gave birth at 25 weeks again, would they all be able to survive?”
But she went ahead and did it anyway.
“We will never forget our first born son but the triplets have enabled us to have a very different ending to our story and we know we would never have had them had we not lost our son,” she said. “I'd always had a strange feeling that I would have triplets, but it was still a huge shock. My husband Timo and I just giggled at each other.”
Her three children were born healthy at 35 weeks.
“It has been an amazing ending to our pregnancies and has helped to heal us,” she also said. “We will never forget our first born son but the triplets have enabled us to have a very different ending to our story and we know we would never have had them had we not lost our son.”
