A 46-year-old English woman was jailed after the bodies of her dead, decomposing pets were discovered in her Yorkshire home.
Tracey Tindall left her cats and dogs to starve in “appalling conditions” in her house, officials said, according to the Telegraph and Argus newspaper.
A “significant number” of dead and decomposing animals were found at her residence in Bradford, ITV reported. Prosecutors said it is one of the “most serious” cases of animal abuse they’ve seen.
RSPCA inspectors said they found animal waste “and rubbish everywhere” in Tindall’s home. Meanwhile, there was no food, water, or bedding for the animals.
Tindall was jailed for 18 weeks for 20 offenses. She was also asked to pay around $500 in fees.
The newspaper reported that Tindall had alcohol, depression, and anxiety issues and was struggling to deal with her ill mother.
“In a kennel in the back garden was the body of a large Mastiff dog that was chained to the kennel by its neck,” Andrew Davidson, prosecuting for the RSPCA, told ITV.
The animal, he added, “was also in a state of decomposition.” When officers went to look into her kitchen window, they saw a ginger cat that was in “very poor” health, he said.
Also, “The inspectors rescued a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and a Collie that were both in very poor bodily conditions with sunken stomachs,” Davidson noted.
Tindall told officials she had been living with her mother, who had dementia. She had been visiting the house but was “unsure” of how many cats she had there.
Davidson’s full statement reads as follows:
When the inspectors went into the living room, the floor was covered in faeces. There was no water present for the animals.
When they went into the dining room, under the table was the body of a black cat which appeared to have recently died.
In a cage they found a bearded dragon which appeared to be lifeless and had no light or water. In the dining area, the inspectors saw four puppy training crates. The right hand crate had the decomposing bodies of two puppies.
Miss Tindall said the puppies had been in the crates for a couple of weeks to stop [them] chewing or wrecking the place.
In the left hand crate there was the carcass of an adult Collie.
Davidson said Tindall told them “she was feeding them when she could but the money she received didn’t go far.”
“She explained she had no gas or electricity for a month and that she couldn’t clean up because she didn’t have cleaning products or hot water,” he said.
But RSPCA Inspector Rachel Evans said she’s never seen such a bad situation in her 12 years on the job.
She told the Telegraph and Argus: “We found the decomposing remains of a further eight cats and dogs and the body parts of an unknown number of cats that had been eaten by the remaining animals in a desperate attempt to stay alive.”
Three of them were young puppies, and were confined to a training crate in the kitchen.
They were left without “food and water, and had been left to die,” Evans said.
