Joe Dolan, an O-U BOCES junior, has made his winning sun catcher for the Gillinder Glass sun catcher design competition that was announced last February.

The theme of this year’s competition, suggested by Deerpark resident Sharon Doolittle, was “American Patriotism.”

Joe’s design, a bald eagle with 13 stars and USA written on it, won first place, while Port Jervis High School junior Emilia Ricciardi took second with her design of a peace symbol formed by a hand. The two were selected out of 160 entries, Gillinder Glass said in a press release.

Both designs are now available at the Gillinder Glass Store, 39 Erie Street in Port Jervis.

Gillinder Glass Factory and Store is one of a handful of hand-blown glass factories left in the U.S. and it has been owned and operated by the same family for 6 generations. They hold the competition to support and develop local artists in the area, “contributing to community pride,” they say.  This is their fifth annual sun catcher design competition.
