Wilfredo Rodriguez of South Boston was arrested and charged for stealing and assaulting a police officer when he stole a police cruiser and tried to run over an officer.

Rodriguez, 37, faces charges of assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, larceny of a motor vehicle, and breaking and entering a vehicle at night, reported Fox Boston.

He attempted to break into a car at around 3:30 a.m. but when police arrived, he left the scene. He later returned and took off in a police cruiser.

Police opened fire but Rodriguez wasn’t hit and he struck one of the officers.

He was arrested a short while later at the JFK/UMass MBTA Station.

“It appears he struck an officer in the process of doing that ... and attempted to run over the officer a second time,” Superintendent in Chief Daniel Linskey told the Boston Herald.

Two officers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
