The Chicago White Sox announced Thursday the signing of starting pitcher John Danks to a five-year, $65 million extension. The size, in both years and dollars, is the most the team has ever handed a pitcher.

“Obviously, I have a tremendous amount of respect for John and what he brings as a talent, but you know just the intangibles he brings,” new White Sox manager Robin Ventura said according to MLB.com, when news of the potential extension broke last week.

The left-handed Danks has made 150 starts in his five-year career, all with Chicago, and after his 6-13 rookie season of 2007, the 26-year-old has averaged 12 wins, 195 innings and an ERA of 3.77 per year.

Under the terms of the deal, Danks will make $8 million in 2012, which would have been his final year of arbitration and then $14.25 million a season from 2013-2016.
