Robinson Cano recently fired super agent Scott Boras in favor of Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation partnership.
The 30-year-old second baseman of the New York Yankees is expected to become a free agent following this season. With Scott Boras, it was almost certain that Cano would test free agency. In free agency, the Yankees would have had to compete with numerous suitors, like the Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and the Los Angeles Dodgers
Despite the new representation, there are still some doubts about what the Yankees will do. The Yankees are still dealing with the 10-year, $275 million contract that Alex Rodriguez received. This commitment has seemed to come back to haunt the Yankees and may continue to do so for years to come. A contract of that size may be up to par with what Cano is expected to earn, which may cause hesitation in the Yankees. There are some reasons to believe Cano’s future is in pinstripes.
It is well-known that Jay-Z is a proud Yankees fan. Robinson Cano has expressed some interest to staying with the Yankees and being in New York to gain success on and off the field. CAA also has a reputation for signing extensions for players with their current teams, including Milwaukee Brewers’ Ryan Braun, Washington Nationals Ryan Zimmerman, and most recently Buster Posey’s eight-year, $159 million contract extension with the San Francisco Giants.
Robinson Cano is expected to receive a contract worth at least $200 million, easily the highest paid second baseman in baseball history. Yankees fans are comforted by this news but it will still take a fair value for one of the best position players in baseball, and that will be expensive.
