A clip that has gone viral shows the last living witness to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865 speaking about it.
“All of a sudden a shot rang out—a shot that always will be remembered—and someone in the President’s box screamed,” Samuel J. Seymour said in a 1954 article published to the Milwaukee Sentinel. “I saw Lincoln slumped forward in his seat. People started milling around and I thought there'd been another accident when one man seemed to tumble over the balcony rail and land on the stage.”
In 1956, he appeared on a TV game show called “I’ve Got a Secret” when he was 96.
The clip went viral on April 14, as it is the same day Lincoln was assassinated.
“You witnessed something to do with Abraham Lincoln,” actress Jayne Meadows said on the show. “Was this a pleasant thing?”
“Not very pleasant, I don’t think, I was scared to death,” Seymour responded.
Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, and he died the next day. He was killed by John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Confederate sympathizer, while attending the play Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theater. It took place just five days after the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, General Robert E. Lee, surrendered to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant.
Booth, who was 26, was tracked down several weeks later and was killed.
