A beetle invasion of Biblical proportions hit a beach in Argentina this week, stunning onlookers.

Looking like something out of science fiction film “Starship Troopers,” the beetles are seen swarming at the resort of Mar de Ajo, located 30 miles from Buenos Aires, the capital, Yahoo News reported.

It looks like Black Maize Beetle (Heteronychus arator), which are known for having mass flights in the summer/autumn.

The beetles have prompted speculation among conspiracy theorists, with YouTube videos springing up with titles like (sic), “INSANE SWARM OF BEETLES FLOODS ARGENTINA beaches LIKE A HORROR MOVIE and scientist do not knows why” and “Huge Beetle Invasion Hits Beach In Argentina, Some Say Its An ‘Apocalyptic Warning.’”

One suggested they were African black beetles, or Heteronychus arator.
