Voters are more trusting of President Donald Trump rather than Democratic Party leaders to keep the U.S. economy growing and protect national security, according to a new poll.

About 45 percent of likely voters said they trusted Trump to “grow the U.S. economy,” compared with 34 percent who said they trusted Democratic leaders to do so, according to a new nationwide Zogby Analytics poll published on Aug. 13. About 21 percent of respondents said they were unsure.

On the question of keeping American safe, the results were similar, with 45 percent saying they trusted Trump more, while 38 percent said they trusted Democratic leaders more.

The numbers highlight a growing enthusiasm for Trump, when compared to previous polls on the same two questions conducted in June and May. During those months, the percentage of voters who trusted Trump hovered around 40 percent, showing an increase in 5 percent with the latest poll.

According to the poll, those two questions are significant in deciding who to vote for.

“If Trump can show that under his tenure there is peace and prosperity, he might be hard to beat in 2020 and Republicans might be able to offset some losses, and retain the House and Senate in the 2018 midterms,” the poll states.

The Zogby poll also found that Republicans are gaining ground on Democrats in the congressional generic ballot. According to Zogby, the latest numbers show that 40 percent of voters are intend to vote Democrat, while 37 percent are planning to vote Republican.

In May, about 33 percent of respondents said they would vote Republican, marking an increase of 4 percent over the past few months.

The pollsters said that Trump, at the moment, is doing well with voters who earn $50,000-$75,000 annually.

“When it comes to income, Republicans do better with voters who earn $100,000 [or more] and Democrats do well with voters who earn [less than] $100,000,” the poll said. “It must be noted that with voters who earn $50,000-$100,000 annually, Democrats and Republicans are statistically tied.”

Meanwhile, 42 percent of respondents approve of the way Trump is handling his job, according to a CNN poll published on Aug. 14.
