Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a longtime friend and associate of Bill and Hillary Clinton, said he believes the former secretary of state is finished with politics after the grueling 2016 presidential race.
“I don’t think Hillary has any interest in running again,” McAuliffe told WTOP-TV on the air, according to the Washington Post.
“I'll let her speak for herself. I haven’t asked her that. I think the president’s probably going to go back, working on all the good deeds he’s done before in helping people around the globe. You know, there are elections. We’ve got to move forward. As governor of Virginia, I’ve got to move forward,” he said.
McAuliffe was a longtime top fundraiser for both of the Clintons, and was also was a close political advisor.
Since the Nov. 8 result, he has discussed the loss with the couple.
“This is hard on anybody. I mean, can you imagine having to go through this? I’ve had many conversations with the Clinton family. We’re friends. It’s hard, very tough. I think on Election Day everybody felt pretty good. I think the Trump campaign thought they were gonna lose. And you know, this is what happens in elections,” he told the station.
McAuliffe said he is looking forward to working with Donald Trump, saying the two men have known each other for 20 years.
“I have known Donald Trump for 20 years, had dinner with him, golfed with him,” McAuliffe said on the radio show. “When I ran [for governor] in ‘09, he actually wrote me a $25,000 check. So I look forward to a productive relationship.”
Hillary Clinton has kept a low profile in the meantime, making a few public appearances and posing for selfies that later appear on social media sites. She gave a speech at the Children’s Defense Fund gala days after the election, and she also appeared at a UNICEF ball to give singer Katy Perry an award.
“On a personal level, I cannot tell you how delighted I am to be here to help celebrate a global megastar, a social-media queen with the most Twitter followers in the world,” Clinton said, as reported by The Daily Beast.
