First lady Melania Trump read to children at an orphanage, fed a baby elephant, and went on a short safari in Kenya, on Oct. 5, the third country on her nearly week-long Africa tour.
Trump, who has also visited Ghana and Malawi, kicked off her day with a stop at an elephant orphanage, where she helped bottle feed an elephant and patted another, clearly having a good time.
Afterward, she donned a white hat and took a short safari in Nairobi National Park, passing by zebras, giraffes and other animals.
Kavanaugh Clears First of Two Senate Votes, Final Vote on Saturday
Judge Brett Kavanaugh is just one step from being confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court after the Senate Republicans pushed his confirmation through a tight 51-49 procedural vote on Oct. 5.By voting to invoke cloture, the floor debate on the confirmation will have a time limit, preventing Democrats to filibuster the final vote expected on Saturday.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders expressed confidence that the Senate will vote to confirm Kavanaugh.
Unemployment Drops to 3.7 Percent–Lowest Since 1969
The unemployment rate has dropped to 3.7 percent, reaching the lowest level since December 1969, as the economy steams ahead.
Government data for September also shows Hispanic unemployment dropped to 4.5 percent, matching the record low of July. Black unemployment dropped to 6 percent, nearly matching the historic low of 5.9 percent recorded in May.
Asian unemployment increased to 3.5 percent while white unemployment dropped to 3.3 percent, the lowest since December 1969.
Chairman of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell said on Tuesday that the economy’s outlook was “remarkably positive” and he believed it was on the cusp of a “historically rare” era of ultra-low unemployment and tame inflation. The central bank raised rates last week for the third time this year.
Interpol President Reported Missing During Trip to China
The president of Interpol, a former senior Chinese security official, has been reported missing after he traveled to his native country at the end of September, a French judicial official said on Oct. 5.
Meng Hongwei’s wife reported on Sept. 28 that she had not heard from her 64-year-old husband since he left Lyon, France, where Interpol is based, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details of an ongoing investigation.
The French official said Meng did arrive in China. There was no further word on Meng’s schedule in China or what prompted his wife to wait until now to report his absence.
