If you were to pit the 2015 Chevy Corvette Stingray Convertible and the 2015 BMW Alpina B6 xDrive Grand Coupe against each other in a drag race, who would win?
Luckily, that’s exactly what the guys at TFLCar did. Find out the results of the race in the video above.
Here’s how the cars match up:
The B6 xDrive is more than 1,000 pounds heavier than the Corvette Convertible.
The Alpina B6 xDrive sports a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine, while the Corvette’s is a naturally aspirated 6.2L V8.
On pure power, the BMW edges out the Chevy. The B6’s V8 spits out 540 horsepower and 540 lb-ft of torque, while the Corvette’s V8 lags behind with 455 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
What about the pounds per horsepower ratio? Here, the Corvette wins with a 7.4 opposite the B6’s 8.3.
Did the Chevrolet Corvette do worse than you thought? There’s a reason for that.
The IMI Motorsports track on which the TFLCar guys raced is situated more than a mile above sea level.
At this elevation, the Corvette’s motor, since it is naturally aspirated, loses about 1/7 of its horsepower.
This high up, there’s less oxygen in the air, and so the Corvette’s 6.2L is pushing out less than 400 horsepower.
As for the BMW Alpina, it’s unclear how much horsepower it is losing on this track, but it’s sure to be less than the Chevy.
