Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams was upset in the first round Monday at Wimbledon 6–1, 6–3 to Russia’s Elena Vesnina.
The 26-year-old Vesnina, ranked 79th in the world, was able to get in 36 of her 52 serves (69 percent), while Williams got less than half her serves (just 20 of 53) in play. The match took just 75 minutes to complete.
“I have to give credit to her. She played well, made hardly any errors, and served very well. Obviously, I would have liked to have won the match, but that didn’t happen today,” said Williams, according to a report on Wimbledon’s website.
The lopsided loss for the 32-year-old Williams follows a second-round upset in last month’s French Open. “Life is challenging, but I’m always up for a challenge.”
