The U.S. Men’s Volleyball team were tested by the German squad, and passed the test, beating Germany 25–23, 25–16, 25–20.

The first set was tight all the way with the two teams trading points up to 23-all before the U.S. got two in a row to take the set.

German kept up the hard fight halfway through the seconds set, not letting the U.S. get more than two points ahead. At 11–10 the United States broke the game open, scoring six straight points. Germany didn’t give up; but the U.S. team was bigger and stronger, leaping higher and hitting harder.

Germany worked hard to dig out many U.S. spikes, but the U.S. triple block stopped most of Germany’s best attacks. The set might have ended sooner had not the U.S. made a few service errors.

USA maintained an edge through most fo the third set, but Germany dug in at 24–16. The U.S. served into the net on match point, then Germany scored four consecutive points on the serving of Gyorgy Grozer. Grozer went to the well one time too many; his next serve went out and the U.S. won the match.

Anderson Matthew had three aces and 11 spikes for the U.S.; Clayton Stanley hit 13 spikes.
